Itwaspurchased for her by her eldest son (Ben) at his age of twelveyears,inthe year of1901 fromthe salary of his first job. -- PennyMalmquistnowhas watch.1968- His father died when he was a small boy. His motherlaterbroughthim and a younger brother to Lostine, where she marriedLynzeHammack whohad threechildren Mayme, Jessie and Sadie. To this unionfourhalfbrother grew up with the Gaskill boys as did Mayme andJessie.Sadielived with her grandparents. Thestep-brothers Lester, Lee,JohnandFred left when grown to resideelsewhere. 135 A son of Walter Earp, Lorenzo D., a native of NorthCarolina,attainedmanhoodin his Kentucky home, whence he immigrated toWarrenCounty,Illinois, in 1846. He made that location his home until1853,when hemoved to Jasper County,Iowas, andengaged in farming untilhisdeath, inthe fall of 1893, at the age of eighty-four years, servingasjustice ofthe peace and postmaster ofGalesburg, Iowa. In hisreligeousconvictions a member of the Methodist EpiscopalChurch,politically hewas a staunch Republican and during the Civil Warwas active ineffortsto raise troops for the Union Army. He was twicemarried, hisfirst wifebeing nancy Storm, a native of Kentucky. NancyEarp died inIllinois,after which her husband again married. He hadeighteenchildren, nine bythe first wife and nine by the second, of whomsix sons and fivedaughters are now living (History of the StateofCalifornia andBiographical Record of the Sacremento Valley, California,1906,p 298 -biography of Peter Asbury Earp).L. D. Earp, farmer, nearGalesburg, Iowa owns 126 acres valuedat $3,600born in Lincoln county,North Carolina in 1809. His father wasaschoolteacher. They moved to thenorth part of Logan County,Kentuckyin1815remained twoyears and then movedto the south part of the samecounty,stayed three years and moved toMorgantown, Butler County,Kentucky andwhen about 17 years oldmoved toOhio county, Kentucky. Therethey livedtill1846, and moved to Monmouth,Warren County, Illinois, therehisfather diedin 1853, and in the fall ofthe same year moved toJasperCounty, where he has since resided. Earpand Lyrrend (sic) Iler on 14 August 1851.Newspaper Clipping-Killduff, Iowa 12 Nov 1856: Lorenzo DowEarp cam tothe Kill duffvicinity about 15 miles SE of Newton, to break afarm outof the wildprairie. He settled here permanently.5 Nov 1839 L.D. Earp mortgaged toTucker D. Ragsdale andNicholas Earp(securities in a Bastardy bond whichthe Ohio county Circuitcourt hasadjudged against him on the November term1839) for the purposeofsecuring them in their said securityship as anindemnity for anyliability which they may occur as his securities. Onehundredacres ofland on which L. D. Earp then resided conveyed to him byJohnKinney(Ohio County, Kentucky, Deed Book H,p 216)5 Nov 1839 L. D. Earpexecuted bond in the sum of $150 for thepayment often annual payments of$15 and thereupon L.D.Earp gave bond withTuckerW.
